Food For The Food: Introduction To Composting
Plants need to eat before people and animals can eat. This workshop is a fun interactive introduction to composting and vital soil science principles.
Roots need to absorb available nutrients from the decomposition of organic matter, and we build organic matter when we make compost! More than half of the resources we discard in landfills are the food and paper waste ingredients (the greens and browns) for potential plant food. We'll learn about affordable methods, recipes and designs easily used at home, school or work. Old waste becomes new health!
Scott Koepke is the Farm Manager at Indian Creek Nature Center's Sugar Grove Farm, and is a member of the Linn County Board of Supervisors' Food Systems Council. He founded Soilmates, a garden education service for children, and Garden Bridge Outreach, a horticulture therapy service for at-risk communities. Scott has taught gardening, soil science and life skills at Kirkwood's Continuing Education Program, and he is a graduate of Iowa State University and a former Peace Corps Volunteer.
This program will be in the community room of Hiawatha Public Library.
