The Hiawatha Public Works Department is responsible for street maintenance, storm water, waste water, ROW landscaping, street signs and traffic control devices, snow and ice control, basic maintenance of all city-owned vehicles, as well as assisting other departments as needed. The department consists of five full-time employees, Superintendent Rod Jasa, Foreman Trent Coberly, Equipment Operators Rob Opfer, Kevin Beckner and Kirk Stout. Hiawatha has approximately 40 miles of roadway with a surface breakdown of 33 miles of concrete, 5 miles of asphalt, and 2 miles of seal coat.
